Again, I love so many of the people in this article, and most of them walk away pretty squeaky-clean; I just take issue with the underlying currents of the piece. It’s all just pretty unexamined!

This is probably the most damning quote (emphasis mine),

“It’s never been a big deal for anyone,” Holmes says. “When you look like me, nobody cares about who you fuck.”

Exactly! Of course no one gives you shit, you look like a straight white man with a beard, and you need to acknowledge that!

Also, yeah, except for a passing Bridesmaids reference and a Paula Poundstone shout-out, everyone here involved is male-identified, and I just think that’s a pretty narrow scope.

While I agree with what Andrew says here (and love Kellen! and, though I don’t know him personally, love the stuff that Steve does), the point of my article was not to exclude anyone as much as it was to highlight some guys who I think are very funny and are breaking stereotypes set forward by both the straight and gay mainstream. I think James Adomian and Gabe Liedman, for example, are polar opposites when it comes to mannerisms and their material! And they handle their sexuality and personalities in completely different ways! As much as I’d like to have focused on every gay comic, it was hard to be include everyone in a 1,500-word trend piece, which is why I focused on five gay male stand-up comics. I was concerned that there would be this reaction, but I want to make it clear that no where in my article did I (or anyone that I interviewed) say something negative about “sissies.” The quote from Dave Holmes above was a reaction to the fact that gay magazines tend to focus on the muscular hairless jock types when it comes to advertising, not that gay magazines don’t pay attention to “butch” gays. To focus on the kinds of comedy mentioned above (some great stuff made by FANTASTIC people that I know back in Chicago, who I will support and applaud until the day that I die) would require a completely different new article.
