In non-9/11 or Chris Brown or gay movie news, I read the cover stories of both this month’s Vanity Fair (the one about Scientology) and New York (the one about Mindy Kaling). In the case of Vanity Fair, I thought it was fine, if not particularly new information (didn’t we hear about the process to find Tom Cruise a lady friend years ago?), but I did think it was a cheap-ass cover, since it was a story pegged to Katie Holmes’s divorce but only about one-fifth of the story had anything to do with her, and they still chose to run some shitty photo they bought as the cover image. And that Mindy Kaling profile: woof. I haven’t read something so calculated and formulaic in years, and it made her seem incredibly disingenuous and only complimented my feeling that The Mindy Project is, at least based on the pilot, absolutely insufferable.
